The St. Leonard's Church in Lipnica Murowana is a historic, wooden cemetery church located in the Bochnia County. Its exceptional value has been recognized by UNESCO, as it has been inscribed on the list of world heritage sites along with other wooden churches in southern Małopolska.
The St. Leonard's Church likely dates back to the 15th century, and according to local tradition, it has existed since either 1143 or 1203. It is situated by the Uszwica River, beyond the historical boundaries of the former fortifications of Lipnica Murowana. This Gothic temple is not only beautiful but has also remained almost untouched, making it one of the most valuable wooden churches in Poland.
The church is oriented and has a log construction with a two-part structure. Its interior is adorned with magnificent polychromes from various periods, such as the Crucifixion, the Last Judgment, and the Last Supper. The valuable furnishings are also noteworthy, including a copy of the St. Leonard triptych, St. Nicholas triptych, and the Adoration of the Infant Jesus triptych. It is worth noting the Gothic bas-relief of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is a true gem from the 14th century.
Unfortunately, the St. Leonard's Church suffered significant damage due to flooding in 1997. However, thanks to the efforts of the locals and restoration works, it has regained its original splendor. In 2010, to protect it from future flooding, it was surrounded by a special collar, and in 2014, mobile flood barriers were installed to provide further protection.
This unique place attracts tourists from all over the world, thanks to its history, architecture, and valuable artifacts.
